December is finally here, and the water and air temperatures begin to become perfect for catching bonefish all day long. The Schooner Cays have been reporting a huge increase in permit running between the shallow shifting sand bars and nutrient rich banks that separate the individual cays. Often the best time to pursue this prize species is on the tail end of an outgoing tide. It seems the larger fish have pushed further into the twists and turns of these ocean “rivers” and are returning to sea much later on the tide change than their smaller relatives. The research being done at Cape Eleuthera Institute is showing a huge increase in the number of tagged and released bonefish staying inside the “Greencastle Cemetery” and “Airport” flats, only exiting the flats at night to seek deep water shelter from predators and returning almost to identical locations each day!
Now that you know where the fish are, get out there and help tag and release some bonefish today!
