[dropcap]F[/dropcap]ebruary in South Eleuthera is another great month for diving. Water temperature this year is likely to be 75-to-76 degrees, warmer than usual. Most of your heat loss is through your head, so bring a hood to complement your long sleeve shorty or full wetsuit, 3 mm is fine. The Nassau grouper are friendlier during the last month of the three-month closure, providing a great opportunity for photography. Cooler water temperatures tend to bring more pelagic fish and spotted eagle rays along the wall, along with the large hawksbill turtles. Cooler water makes for greater visibility, typically greater than 100-feet during winter. On the south end of Eleuthera the diving is protected from the winter winds as the wall is close to the shoreline and in the lee of the island. So while it may be incredibly rough on the east side of the island, the diving down south is still excellent. Safety Tip for February: If you are headed to the Bahamas for a February dive trip and bringing your own gear, especially regulators and BCD’s, remember to have the annual service done prior to your trip as most of the out island dive shops do not have traditional repair shops; but be sure to check out your gear before you leave for the trip.
