Fort Pierce Fishing Report and Forecast – May 2012

INSHORE

I am looking for this to be a good summer with plenty of fishing action. As we all know, we haven’t had much of a winter and the fish have had an easy winter too. Look for trout to be big and hungry at places like Bear Point, Pete Stone creek and Round Island. Try a Love Whitebait or a shrimp fished under a popping cork and use a Kahle hook – size will depend on the bait you use. If it’s artificial baits that you like to use, it will be hard to beat a top water bait fished early in the morning. There should also be quite a few redfish and snook hanging around the docks along Indian River Drive – both to the north and south. The Ft. Pierce Inlet should be stacked with snook taking live baits. Look for the snapper to move in around the channel edges and they will be taking a small live shrimp.

OFFSHORE

Everyone is looking for the dolphin bite to really heat up and with the dolphin that have come to the dock in April, it should be a great bite. Try trolling a green/ yellow or a pink/white skirted ballyhoo. You will want to drop your bait at about 60 feet of water and work your way out. The kingfish will be working their way to the beaches and feeding on live baits like blue runners, mullet and pilchards. Also, as the ocean and the weather gets nicer there will be lots of anglers making the long run for tuna. The snapper fishing over the reefs and wrecks should be good around the full moon with the night bite being the better one. You will want to use either live or cut baits.
