St. Lucie County Offshore Fishing Forecast – March 2013

March on the Treasure Coast is typically a very windy month. This is the month that I make sure my boat and fishing gear are in tip top shape. On those less windy days when you can get offshore the cobia can be found along the beaches and wrecks. The grouper and snapper bite is going well, but you must release all groupers and some snappers as well. The dolphin a.k.a. mahi-mahi migration will be going off and this is one of the times of the year that you can catch some really big ones too. Kingfish will be in 40 to 90 feet. When you’re catching live bait around the offshore buoys, have that pitch rod rigged with a plastic eel or Red Tail Hawk Jig for any cobia that may come swimming by. For you lobster divers, remember that you can’t keep any of these tasty bugs after March 31st. If you’re ever in doubt about what you can or can’t keep, visit www.myfwc.com for all your up to date fishing regulations.
