[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith September being more of a transition month than anything, it’s really important to be ready for just about everything. Wahoo are an excellent possibility, especially in the early morning and late evening around the full moon this month. High-speed trolling is a great way to target them, but it limits possibilities of catching other fish and doesn’t let you take full advantage of what the Treasure Coast offers. Trolling a mixed spread of ballyhoo, mullet, and strip baits rigged on wire and skirted with Canyon Gear Dredge Heads or Hoo Machines is a great way to cover all your bases. I prefer the dredge heads on my long riggers because aside from being able to change the lure without having to re-twist your haywire, they are lighter, so you can fish it further back and it still skips. Make sure you fish at least one bait on a downrigger or planer too. I use the Cannon 10 TS for its auto features and cycle mode, which triggers bites from lazy fish. For those who rather live bait, that’s a great way to target them too. Be ready to add a stinger with a trace of wire if you start getting clipped off, like I said there are wahoo, and kings.
If you don’t have one, get one, you definitely want to fish a Stripteaser while you’re drifting or slow trolling. I pull mine off the downrigger in auto mode and it does pull fish up from the deep.
Dolphin, sailfish, blackfin, kingfish, and of course wahoo will be your target species while fishing along the 8 Mile Reef, Loran Tower Ledge, The Hill, Pinnacles, and Peanut, while amberjacks, snapper, and some cobia will still keep you busy along the other reefs and wrecks. Give me a call if you have any questions, or if you would like to set up a trip. Looking forward to fishing with you soon, and I hope all your trips are Off the Chain.
