Stuart/Martin County Offshore Fishing Forecast – July 2012

Fishing will continue to heat up along with the summer temperatures. Fishing in July can be as explosive as the Fourth of July and all you have to do is decide what you want to target.

Whether chasing big tarpon, snook and permit on the beach or targeting swordfish, “the Gladiator of the Sea” during a calm night out on the water, Stuart is the place to be. The great bottom fishing that goes on in May and June will continue into July, and the snapper fishing will peak around the full moon for muttons and mangrove snapper. Grouper and snapper will be caught in big numbers in July and you can expect regular encounters with amberjack and cobia while bottom fishing. Dolphin fishing will taper off from the spring run but some stragglers will be caught and with each passing tropical system to the south, Gulfstream currents will push debris to the north where dolphin can be targeted. Sailfish move back to the north during the month of July and you can expect regular encounters with sailfish in July whether trolling or live baiting. Look for free jumping fish and start fishing. The majority of the sails you will see this time of year will be deeper than the winter sails that migrate south. They will be riding the Gulfstream current north like an escalator.

One of my favorite times to swordfish is during the flat calm nights of the summer. Fishing for swordfish is great from Palm Beach to Ft. Pierce during the summer months. Most of the fish are smaller but the numbers are larger. Don’t take the small fish thing too lightly though; big resident fish roam off the coast and encounters with a 200-plus pound fish are not an uncommon thing during the summer.

Bottom line is no matter what floats your boat, July brings great fishing.
