The 6th annual Women in the Outdoors will provide an opportunity for women of all walks of life, singles, moms, daughters, young and old, to spend a weekend outdoors, away from home, having fun and making new friends.

The Indian River Penwa Huntresses chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will host its 6th annual Women in the Outdoors event on April 27-28 at Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee, Florida.

“Our program is about encouraging women to try new outdoor activities in a safe environment that makes them feel at ease,” said Brenda Valentine, NWTF spokeswoman, First Lady of Hunting™ and host of the NWTF’s “Turkey Call” TV show airing on Pursuit Channel, and Bass Pro Shops’ “Real Hunting” TV show. “This event is also an opportunity for women of all walks of life, singles, moms, daughters, young and old, to spend a weekend outdoors, away from home, having fun and making new friends.”

Women in the Outdoors events, designed just for women age 13 and older, teach outdoor skills through interactive hands-on education, emphasizing the importance of wildlife management and the role of hunters in conservation. A partial listing of workshop offerings for the weekend include basic and advanced archery, canoeing/kayaking, outdoor photography, self-defense, yoga, fishing, hand gun safety, shotgun/sporting clays, Cracker Living and Cowboy Roping, traditional swamp cabbage cooking, Dutch oven cooking, jewelry making, Couponing 101, Florida First Aid (learning what every outdoor woman should take on an adventure in the wild), as well as Leave No Trace, which teaches vital skills to minimize environmental impacts and protect natural resources.

Registration fee is $65 and the event kicks off Friday (April 27) evening with an optional dinner and social ($25 per person), Osceolas Under the Oaks at Quail Creek, which includes dinner, a silent auction and campfire.

The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation organization that was founded in 1973 and has worked with wildlife agencies to restore wild turkey populations from 1.3 million wild turkeys to nearly 7 million today. Now, NWTF’s volunteers raise funds and work daily to improve critical wildlife habitat, increase access to public hunting land and introduce new people to the outdoors and hunting. Together, the NWTF’s partners, sponsors and grassroots members have raised and spent more than $331 million preserving hunting heritage and conserving nearly 15.9 million acres of wildlife habitat.
