June is all about warm temperatures, thunderstorms, and tarpon. Tarpon, a fish you love to catch and the one that tests angling skills. Tarpon, with their size, strength and amazing jumps, makes one of the most exciting fish to target. For every hook up, you may land one out of ten. June will give you the chance to target this great fish, but you will need the right equipment. Here’s the list. A reel that holds 300 yards of 30 lb. test, a smooth drag, and a nice stiff rod rated 20 to 50 and 8-feet in length. Use a 50 lb. to 80 lb. leader, depending on the size of the expected fish. Best live baits are mullet, greenies, and sardines. Best lures, are big plugs: YO-ZURI Crystal Minnows, Bomber Long A, MirrOlures, or anything that looks like a mullet or the bait that they are feeding on at the time. Schools of anchovies will be on the beach, just look for the clouds in the water. Tarpon, snook, jacks, sharks, bluefish, and redfish will be destroying the anchovies. Make sure you cast outside of the schools. This is where the fish will be waiting to take their turn to fill up. Best places hands down will be the beach, early morning or late afternoon on the in-coming tide. Walton Rocks, Bob Graham, House of Refuge, Stuart Beach, Hobe Sound and Bathtub Beach will be the top of the list locations to catch these fish and where the schools of bait will be. You might have to do a little driving to find where the bait is, but the payoff will be a fish of a life time.
