On The Water With Hobie

The difference between owning a nice kayak and making sure it is a fish-catching machine often lies in a few key after-market additions. If you are like me and often fish out of more than one Hobie model (I actually switch back and forth, as my Revo is easier to drag across the flats on extremely low winter tides), look to add Turbo Fins and a sailing rudder to traditional kayaks like the Revo and Outback. Turbo Fins will get you where you’re going faster and with less effort. A sailing rudder puts more surface area in the water than the standard model and makes pivoting much easier, especially on days when the wind is gusting.

Most of the year I fish out of my PA14, and for a minimal investment you can add the XL Rudder Kit to give you pinpoint handling. The power knob, much like the Edsel knob in power boats, allows for sharper steering while turning and a comfortable place to rest your hand while traveling to your favorite honey holes. There is also a new screw-in paddle clip that replaces a pad eye to securely keep your paddle from going overboard.

If you have a paddle kayak, remember that your paddle is your motor. Invest in the lightest, most durable paddle you can fit into your budget. Look at brands like Accent, Adventure Technology and Werner. Today’s composites have several paddles weighing in at less than 30 ounces. If you bought a new Maverick flats skiff or Ranger Bass boat, you would not put an old clunker motor on it. Think the same way when you choose a paddle. Today, many kayak manufacturers are offering great options on stand-to-fish boats, and I have found I really prefer a SUP paddle in this case, and again, the lighter the better.

You will also want to make sure you have a top-notch anchoring system. The Power-Pole Micro has changed the game. There is nothing like drifting a flat and being able to stop on the dime via the remote around your neck once you spot your targeted quarry. It is the perfect complement to the Pro Anglers, and there is a minimally invasive mounting system that will allow you to move the unit on and off your boat and not have to include it if you decide to upgrade to the new year’s model down the line. If the Power-Pole does not fit into your budget, you may want to look into the Wang anchor stake-out pole. The Wang anchor is not only a stake-out; it also functions as a brake, much like the Power-Pole as you approach your target.

When it comes to carrying the essential tools needed to maximize my catch, I rely on two separate units that not only make everything accessible, but also do the best job of prolonging those that have moving parts. My electronics (phone, camera, electronic truck key) go into a Pelican case. There are limitless choices of box sizes depending on your degree of photography expertise. I use the Yak Attack Black Box for most of my tackle. My favorite features of this unit are its ability to allow rods to be mounted in a multitude of angles, so they are never an issue while casting, and the Pan Fish mount which allows me to take all those timer shots that you have seen over the last five years.
