As of this writing, February is here, and while most of the United States is in the full swing of winter, we here in the Out Islands of the Bahamas are still experiencing temperatures that most people would consider their summer! Water temperatures have dropped a few degrees, but don’t go running for those wetsuits quite yet, because air temperatures are still being recorded in the lower 80’s. January brought several days of windy conditions, as kites and windsurfers were seen on the water just about every other day, but we have yet to see Florida produce a good Northwest front to bring the big swells we have all been waiting for. We had reports of waist to chest high waves early in the month, but we never saw it get much bigger than that. Looking forward as we touch into late February and March, we continue looking for the fronts pushing off the U.S. coast and into the lower Caribbean. These fronts may not be strong enough to generate big swells this far south, however they have been consistently giving us several days of 15 to 20 knot winds. Although our surfboards may be getting a bit dusty, our kites are seeing plenty of airtime.
