Tropical Storm Emily gave us our first taste of the 2011 hurricane season but weakened as it crossed Haiti only able to produce some gusty winds, a bit of rain and minimal surf. Well into August we have begun to see a pattern of surface lows starting to spin off of the coast of Africa only to be pushed north by high pressure systems blanketing the entire Bahamas chain giving us plenty of time on and under the water.
Lobster season is in full swing and already reports of huge bugs being caught in the San Salvador, Rum Cay and Long Island areas and the photos are incredible. Free-diving off paddleboards is very popular this time of year with the lighter winds and calmer waters that summertime is known for. Divers have been reporting visibility over 90 feet and water temperatures are still in the upper 80’s.
September through October we look forward to winds increasing in the afternoon to help us kick off our sailing season. In the upcoming months, we need to keep our eyes to the southeast watching the low pressure systems that can produce great opportunities for some wind and waves for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing enthusiasts. The Lower Bahamas is definitely the place to be for some great wind, water and wave action!
