Yellowfin Charity Classic

Chasten Whitfield

The yellowfin classic charity is all about Helping toys for tots and getting as much toys as we can for these kids. But this year there were a couple surprises, good surprises. As I walked into the captains meeting with a bag of toys I noticed a group of younger girls registering for the tournament so I went up to the team of girls and introduced myself.  These girls were 14 years old and two out of four of them have their boaters license. I asked them what made them want to fish this tournament and they told me that they are fishing this tournament because they saw me fishing tournaments. That made me tear up. I asked them if I could take a picture and maybe do a little interview so if there are any other girls thinking about doing something like this, this article could help encourage you to fish tournaments. I also asked what’s the goal of fishing this tournament, they said to have fun and maybe win. They told me that there are a couple of boys who think it’s funny that girls are fishing. I told them to just brush it off and fish for the right reasons and have fun. During the shot gun start, they pulled up to the head boat which I was in, as I was helping this year and not fishing it. The girls pulled up next to the boat, showed their number and then took off. That was probably one of the coolest things as it brought back so many memories of our girl team back in high school. Just before weigh in, the kids seawall took place and I was very much in my element. After the weigh in, I asked them a couple questions about them fishing. They caught some good fish! They said it took a little while to get their first fish but they did not give up. One of the girls on the team got biggest trout and overall, they were 2nd in the tournament. I am so proud of these girls. If you’re a girl reading this right now, and maybe too much drama going on, or just a goal of fishing in a tournament you need to pull up Instagram and send me a private message @chastenation. We need more girl fishing in the field.  Check out the video link and don’t forget to please find me on Instagram, let’s talk about your 2021 tournaments plans.
