Mosquito Lagoon

Cody nabs a great first ever redfish on his first ever fishing charter recently with Capt. Mark Wright. This top-slot red fell to a Z-Man Diezel Minnowz in the Sexy Mullet color!

Fishing has been generally good if not a bit sporadic this late summer and September will undoubtedly be the same.

Z-Man Diezel Minnowz and Grass Kickerz have been producing well on spotted seatrout and redfish alike. Married to an appropriately sized EZ Keeperz hook these lures are user friendly and productive. A steady retrieve works well, though I’m personally fond of the reel/stop/reel approach. Letting the lure rest a moment or two on the bottom often results in solid, aggressive bites!

The early morning top-water bite is still great if you can find an area holding lots of small mullet without too much floating grass.

The big redfish are becoming quite active in their usual haunts and by the time this article hits the streets expect the spawning season to be underway.

The Haulover Canal is the pass way for these breeding fish to join together with the breeders of the IRL. Those anglers not comfortable negotiating the shallows of the Mosquito Lagoon have a great opportunity to catch a trophy here as the big reds travel back and forth through the canal. LIVE mullet, pinfish and blue crabs are prime baits that the bait stealers tend to ignore.
