March fishing can be tough at times but it can be very productive as well; it’s usually a transition period as the waters are warming up and fish are beginning to migrate or move to different feeding grounds. Trout should be moving out of the freshwater inflows, like the rivers, intracoastal waterways, and/or from the beaches and back into the bay areas. Fishing in the outflows of these waterways can be productive using live shrimp or any soft plastic jigs resembling shrimp. Redfish should begin the migrations back into the bays during March or shortly after.
Sheepshead this time of year are a great species to target. They begin their breeding patterns where they school in large numbers on or near structure and hard bottom in 20- to 50-feet of water. To really increase you odds of catching some, use live shrimp or pieces of dead shrimp and squid on a 2/0 circle hook and a 1/2- to 2-ounce lead with a 20 lb. monofilament leader.
