October Page #1
October 2017, I began my monthly letter to you, telling you that I was heartbroken because of the hurricane destruction in Florida, Texas and of course Puerto Rico, (and now we know that almost 3000 Puerto Ricans died as the result of Hurricane Maria). Tonight, I am heartbroken again, because of the killer storm in North and South Carolina. The death toll is already in the double digits. Even though our home on the Suwannee is built on stilts, if a rain maker such as Hurricane Florence hit the Okefenokee Swamp in South Georgia, our home, and every other home on, or near, the Suwannee, would be totally submerged; a very sobering thought. I love my river in my front yard, but not in my house. Our antique Buick club has a tour planned for the first week of November in New Bern, NC, and the surrounding area. New Bern suffered serious flooding, but if they are ready for visitors in November, we will be there. They will need the tourist dollars.
October–lower temps and lower humidity–my favorite month of the year! I love the Confederate Rose trees that bloom in the fall. I have several trees in my yard and I have seen them as far north as Southern Virginia. See pink and white flowers on this page.
Thank you to John Freeze (writes CENTRAL FLORIDA INLAND) for this beautiful photo of a sunset, on a secluded lake in the Ocala National Forest.
See page 10 for Rosa’s cleaning service, Top Notch Quality Services. Rosa helps us deliver the magazines to our distribution sites.
This month’s recipe, Shrimp with Cauliflower/Potato Mash, on page 9, is super easy and super delicious. Cary really likes the mashed potato/cauliflower side. This one is in the category of “You can make this again.”.
As always, please thank our advertisers for making this FREE magazine possible. (You would not believe my print bill!) Also, thank the folks at the location where you picked up this magazine. My guides are telling me that fishing is good, so get out there and catch something.
