Wewahitchka & Dead Lakes Fishing Report: Nov. 2013

7-WEWAHITCHKA

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith some rain last month, our Dead Lakes and the river rose a little. But now slow to fall, the fishing has been absolutely awesome! Fall has arrived with great weather and cooler nights. That combination brings some wonderful fishing and good times on the water in November. With our historical wet spring and summer, which brought high water and less fishing pressures, the fish have had more time to eat and grow, and are now pot bellied and fat.

Everyone has been catching huge numbers of bream and shellcrackers and plenty of 10 to 12 inch Channel cats that must have slipped through the dam at Lake Seminole. I will also add that this fall season has brought the best fishing in 5 to 7 years thanks to the high water this spring and summer. Big cats are biting very well too, so you may have to give up one of those nice fat bream off that dinner plate for a bigger pull. Largemouth bass have been doing fair with nice ones being caught, but the small ones are being released. I’ve heard of many 1 to 2 pounders, but the best news is this; bream fishermen are catching small fingerling 4 to 6 inch Largemouth bass and being released. That is awesome and this type conservation is a restocking program for us for next year and years to come. We appreciate that, so please handle them carefully and release them quickly back into the water so they can grow up and we can catch them down the road when they become hogs. Large bass have been eating swim frogs white buzz baits, and small white spinner baits (3/8 ounce) fished slow as you can but keep them towards the top. From all of us at The Fishin Shack in Wewahichka and the Dead Lakes- Tight lines, set the hook, hold on, you might have a big one. And take a kid fishing!
