[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his time of year is one of my favorite times to fish. As the mornings and evenings become cooler, the fish are feeding and fattening up before winter. We are not too far away from the bull reds coming in for breeding, and when that happens, it’s like catching Red drum in a barrel. These breeder redfish are mystical and extremely strong fish and they will fight until there is nothing left in them. The weather also makes being out there so enjoyable and it seems the bite is more consistently good with a majority of species, such as Red drum, trout, flounder, huge Spanish mackerel, kings, Sea bass, snapper, grouper and more! As the water cools, the grouper will start coming in closer along with the big Sea bass. If you want to have a successful day out there think about what is going on bait wise. Some people say “match the hatch”. Right now, live shrimp inshore will keep your rod bending and your reel reeling. Offshore, live bait caught from the reef is almost always a success. Good luck out there and check the weather before you go. The winds are going to be picking up, however there will still be those calm windows of opportunity.
As the hunting season arrives, the boat gets put on a back burner. One tip that may make your next fishing trip during and after hunting season is to run the engine. You will have less mechanical hassles later if you do this. Simply hook the hose up and run your engine for 5 minutes or so. It’s even better if you can take her out for a quick ride, but that’s not always easy when you’re in the woods for days or a week of hunting. With the engine running, I like to check to make sure the steering has plenty of fluid or grease. Then I check the trim and listen for it to sound smooth, and any other systems that may need some service. By the time your inspection is over, your engine has warmed up and moved those fluids throughout. Running your boat at least once a month will pay off and keep you happy when you go to finish up the grouper season or catch some fat winter time redfish. Winter is a good time of year to get everything serviced, cleaned up, and to fix those little problems you dealt with while fishing season was hot and busy. Don’t forget about your trailer either. Greasing your wheel bearings will keep you from having breakdowns and sitting on the side of the road, or having to replace bearings and hubs. Give us a call anytime to have us service your engine, repair your fiberglass, go through the systems or almost any other marine service you may need. Tight lines, be safe and have some good times out there!
