With summer past mid-point, visibility still exceeds 100 feet. As of this writing, there is no evidence of algae bloom. The swim-throughs and caverns in the reef continue to be graced by the glassy (copper) sweepers and silversides. It is quite a thrill to watch their ballet like precision. We are reaching our maximum air and water temperatures this month. Average air temperature ranges from 76-to-88F and water temperature is averaging 86F. Ocean current remains virtually non-existent and wind is light, except during the occasional thunder boomers most often occurring in the afternoons.

Our thoughts on the recent Bahamas shark legislation: With many fish populations dwindling and their species threatened throughout the world, the government of the Bahamas played a pivotal role in July by enacting a law banning commercial shark fishing within the Islands of the Bahamas. This proactive protection extends to the approximately 40 species found within Bahamian waters. DIVE ABACO! applauds this endeavor and encourages our visitors to participate in one of the shark observation dives we offer to gain continued respect and appreciation of the importance of protecting this magnificent creature. August is a terrific month to visit Abaco and celebrate the island wide protection of sharks…just one more reason why “It’s Better in the Bahamas!”
