Warmer water temperatures make March a good month for bonefish. As the temperatures rise, more schools of smaller bonefish will be on the flats, with the bigger bonefish tailing. These conditions allow for a lot more opportunities to catch an elusive bonefish. The warmer water also brings more permits onto the flats, and may get you a chance at a tarpon, barracuda or shark. It will definitely be a great time to fish the shallow waters of our islands.
Here’s what I would recommend for tackle:
- For the fly fisherman, an 8 weight fly rod is best. Use a 10 pound test leader at least 9-10 feet in length. Light to medium tan, or pink, colored flies will be the best bet to catch any of our shallow water visitors.
- If you’re a more traditional spin fisherman, a 6 foot spinning rod with 10 pound test is a good combination. Either artificial or live bait will work.
If you’re fishing with us, we supply all the tackle needed. We also do reef fishing and snorkeling trips. So, whatever you might be interested in, give us a call, or drop us an email to plan a trip you won’t regret.
