March is a challenging month on the flats in the Bahamas. Traditionally one of the coldest and windiest times of the year, you will need to be prepared for these conditions. Practice, practice, practice, your casting, and get very comfortable with the double haul. If you are bringing your own equipment, I would suggest investing in one of the wind efficient lines. Be prepared for the possible cold temperatures, and don’t forget your rain gear and warm layers, because staying warm on the flats will make or break your day. If you run into a cold front while you are here, a 9 weight will be the stick of choice. One of the good features about fishing in Nassau is that the island lies east and west, so with a north wind we have lots of places to find calm water and happy fish on the south side. We are seeing good numbers of fish averaging 4 to 6 pounds, and larger crab patterns, like Merkins and EP Crabs, will work well. We are experiencing one of the mildest winters to date, so let’s hope our luck holds and you land the big one this March.
