A foggy bite in Titusville!

Bob is more than happy with this huge black drum!
The bite is very good in both the North Indian River & South Mosquito Lagoon. Heavy fog might be a boating angler’s only real obstacle right now. For the last several days the fog has stayed too thick to safely scoot about the shallows.

Fog or not, the fish are feeding and they are not too fussy. Soft plastics are ruling the roost for my anglers targeting redfish and big trout. Exude Darts & Banks Lures Flats Creepers have been outstanding. Yes, we’re rigging them weedless using either Aqua Dream Living’s finesse swim jig hooks or Mission Fishin’ swim bait hooks.

You’ll need to experiment a bit with your retrieve. I tend to start with an aggressive and snappy twitch, twitch, and pause cadence and gradually slow my retrieve until the fish respond!

Often, you’ll find a little extra “bottom time” with your soft plastic lure pays off. This becomes especially true when fishing schooling reds and black drum. I have great luck letting my smelly soft plastic bait lay motionless or nearly so on a patch of clean sand and letting the fish swim over it until “one” just can’t say no!

For me and mine live shrimp, dead shrimp and cut mullet (YES, cut mullet) are the baits of choice for black drum lately! Find a school working the drop-off edges of major flats. Be patient and cast to them from a distance. Remember, these fish can be fussy and it sometimes takes many “perfect” casts to get a bite!
