Abaco Inshore Fishing Forecast – May 2012

In the month of May the bonefishing in Abaco will be excellent, with a lot of schooling fish, both large and small, on the flats. The catch each day so far has been in double digits, averaging 10 to 20 per day. Wading the flats, stalking the bonefish, and trying to make the right cast to catch one is always a thrill. Permit have been seen on the flats every other day, but not as many have been caught. Barracuda and mutton snappers will be moving onto the flats in large numbers due to warmer water temperatures. The month of May will continue to bring more fish onto the flats, so that means a lot more opportunities to catch a bone.

For tackle, we recommend an 8-weight fly rod with a 10-pound leader, at least 10 to 12 feet long, outfitted with #6 flies; light to medium tan colors, and light pink works best. For the bigger fish like barracuda and shark, a 9-weight fly rod will work better. With a lighter tackle spin rod, try a 6 foot rod with 10-pound test line, and artificial or live bait.
