Apalachicola / Indian Pass / St. Joe Bay – May 2017

May is definitely one of my favorite months for inshore fishing!  Spring-time is in full effect, temperatures are warmer and the waters are becoming alive with bait and large predators feeding on them.

For the most part, May is when all of our inshore species are in season: trout, flounder, redfish, mackerel, cobia, tarpon, triple tail, jacks, sharks and more.  There is a huge variety of fish that can be caught during this time, and the bays and flats are teeming with bait.

The best method for a great day of fishing is to net some live bait.  Pilchards are just showing up, but pinfish and live finger mullet work well.  For rigging this live bait, I like to hook it under a popping cork with about 14-18 inches of leader and a 2/0 VMC circle hook.  Fish anywhere from 2- to 5-feet of water over the grass flats, where you can see a lot of bait in the area; there will be trout and redfish close by.
