You might think there’s an ordinance that requires people who live on lakes to own pontoon boats. Virtually every dock has one. For the longest time, I considered pontoon boats as awkward contraptions for entertaining kids, grandparents and friends who came up from the city. They were slow and lacked the pizazz of a sleek fishing boat.

Mobile Bay Experiences First Jubilee of the Summer

Alabama’s first jubilee of the summer occurred June 12 on Mobile Bay’s Eastern Shore. With flounder, shrimp, blue crabs and other tasty critters flopping around in the shallows near Point Clear, many collected coolers full of seafood, while others went home with citations from Alabama game wardens.

Frustrations Mount Over NOAA Failures

The Center for Sportfishing Policy, an organization formed in 2006 to advance issues related to marine conservation, recreational fishing and boating, and public access to the nation’s coastal resources, issued the following statement regarding NOAA’s recent decisions.

California Bans Sturgeon Fishing

If catching the continent’s largest freshwater game fish was on your bucket list, you won’t be doing it in California… at least for the time being. In a meeting last week, the California Fish and Game Commission (CFG) temporarily shut down all fishing for white sturgeon while fisheries experts consider protecting the species under the state’s Endangered Species Act. The review process for potential listing of white sturgeon as a threatened species is expected to take up to a year.

Cooper Garmeson set a new IGFA all-tackle junior length record with this 93-centimeter (36.6-inch) jack crevalle he caught out of Dauphin Island, Ala. last October 21.

That’s a Big Ole Bass

Capt. Tom Weaver, who guides on Chesapeake Bay out of Annapolis, Maryland, caught this monster striped bass last Dec. 30 on a fly rod. With a length of 102 centimeters (a little more than 40 inches), IGFA recently adopted the fish as a new fly-caught all-tackle length world record.
