New Year, new waves and maybe Santa brought you a new board!? January is a great month to break it in here in the Bahamas. This month competes each year for the title of most days with clean, rideable surf. Swell is generated by winter fronts pushing off the U.S. eastern seaboard. Ideally, the tail of the front, which will bring onshore winds for most breaks, pushes over the Bahamas quickly and the winds shift offshore for most breaks. Wave size can be anywhere from 2 to 10 feet and rideable on either end of that spectrum. You’ll need a board that works on a bit of size, but also something that works for those 3 to 5 foot days. The beginning of December was quite warm and water temperatures began to edge up just a degree or two. Expect mid-to-low 70’s for the water temp, colder in some areas. Bring a lighter wetsuit, especially if you plan on doing some diving. For the runners out there the Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend is Jan 19-20, 2013 and features a full and half marathon.
