Bahamas Surf Report – December 2011

December is one of the best months for surfing on Eleuthera. PHOTO CREDIT: http://www.surfscience.com.

Aaaah, December….cool air permeates the Bahamian atmosphere, Christmas is in the air, island hustle and bustle increases with the advent of tourist season and, oh yeah, the surf is great!

December, along with January and February, are some of the best months for pumping, clean swell in the Bahamas. Many of the known (and not so known) spots in Abaco and Eleuthera fire in December as the north swells follow one after the other. Anywhere from 2 to 10 foot swell fills the ocean and when the jet stream dips below or near Cape Hatteras our islands soak up the waves generated by winter systems making their way across the Atlantic. Water temperatures remain in the mid-to-high 70s in most of the archipelago and when the sun is shining (as it usually is) no wetsuit is needed. For those who feel the cold, a good neoprene top or spring suit are plenty. And if the waves go flat, hit the annual Junkanoo festivals that are held on most of the major islands around Boxing Day and New Year’s.
