Banana River Lagoon

Captain Jim Ross

Captain Jim releasing a tagged CCA Star redfish.

Fishing in this portion of the lagoon is still not what it should be for this time of the year, but there are still some fish to be caught in the shallows during early morning periods on most days. Look for black drum, redfish, and trout feeding on the flats on most days. Live shrimp, fingerling mullet, and small pinfish or pilchards will work best for the redfish and trout. Small crab, sand fleas, or live or fresh cut shrimp are usually what the drum prefer. Anglers that prefer lures should try Rapala Skitterwalk top water plugs in the bone chartreuse, speckled trout, or redfish patterns from day break until about 8 am, then switch to the new Twichin’ Mullet or small size (07) Sub Walk lures in the silver and black, olive green, or glass ghost colors. If fish are sitting near docks and mangrove roots then try the Saltwater Assassin 4-inch Shrimp cocktail in the green shrimp, light beer, or pappa smurf colors rigged on a weedless worm hook or 1/16-ounce jig head. Move these very slowly and the drum, reds, or trout should gobble them up. Don’t forget to sign up for the 2017 CCA Star tournament. I personally helped tag and release redfish for you all to go out and catch in this event. If you catch one of these fish with a bright green tag in it, and you are entered in the tournament, you will win a new truck or boat-so do it today! If you need a reference when signing up please feel free to use my name- thanks!
