Banana River Lagoon

Darren Conner with a beautiful trout that hit an Assassin 4-inch sea shad.

A variety of fish should be possible as long as we don’t get huge algae bloom this summer. Decent sized speckled trout can be found shadowing schools of larger mullet in the flats throughout this piece of water.

Areas like the Kars park flat, hospital flat, north and south 1000 Islands flats, or flats along the western shoreline north and south of the Pineda causeway are generally good places to start your search. Top water plugs like the Rapala “Skitterwalk”, or soft plastic lures like the Saltwater Assassin “Salty Snack” that imitate smaller mullet are great choices when trying to entice a big speck to strike for you. Anglers should be able to find smaller “schoolie” sized trout along the drop-offs in the 3 to 6-foot depths where grass or other ground cover is present. Three to four-inch-long Assassin sea shad are hard to beat when working these areas. A few redfish, black drum, ladyfish, and jack should also be possible for anglers working in this portion of the lagoons system. Live shrimp is your best option if yo are looking for variety, but a cut piece of ladyfish soaked on the bottom will be hard to beat if you want to strictly target the redfish.
