Large trout in the 4 to 8 pound range should be found near mullet pods the flats of this lagoon. Live finger mullet are very productive for these larger trout. Just remember that they are very smart and won’t tolerate anything that looks unnatural. I use a 2/0 to 4/0 sized VMC circle hook and about 4 feet of 15 pound Suffix fluorocarbon leader material in front of my braided main line to keep the trout from suspecting anything is about to go array for them. Anglers can also use top water plugs like the Rapala X-Walk top water plugs in the morning or evening periods with good success. Some of the largest trout my clients catch throughout the year come on these very plugs. Just remember to work them in correlation with the wind conditions of the morning. Slower when it’s calm and more aggressively when there is a chop on the waters surface. Once the sun gets a little higher in the sky move to slightly deeper water along the edges of the flats and switch your lure to a sub surface plug like the X-Rap (size 10) or Twichin’ Rap in the “olive flash” or “hot bone” color patterns. Slot sized redfish are also going to strike these lures and if your in the right area you may add a snook to complete your inshore slam if everything goes you way. Catching all three of these species is a very impressive accomplishment for any anglers during a single day of fishing.
