T rout, ladyfish, and small crevalle jack should be following schools of glass minnows in the middle sections of this lagoon. Small spoons, jigs, and lipped diving plugs and other small minnow imitators should work very well for these aggressively feeding fish. Look for pelican, terns, and gulls to tip you off to the location of the heaviest feeding activity. This is a great way for anglers to improve their casting and hook setting capabilities because the schools of fish move quickly and the ladyfish within these feeding schools are difficult to keep hooked. Anglers can actually practice bowing to the little silver queens so that they are ready for anything that a tarpon can throw at them. Slot sized redfish should be working the edges of the mangrove covered shorelines in the thousand island area and along many of the residential docks between the highway 528 causeway and Mathers Bridge. Snook and large trout can should also be possible at times near dragon point. Live pinfish, mullet or jumbo shrimp should all be effective baits to use there. Cut baits may be a better option for anglers fishing on the flats during mid day periods than live ones, because large trout and redfish become lethargic in the summer heat and don’t like having to chase down live baits most of the time.
