Most of the winter cold fronts will have passed by now, and large speckled trout will respond by moving into the shallow flats of this lagoon. Their mission is to feed on the abundant schools of mullet that will be congregating there. Grassy flats will hold more fish than barren flats will, so look for the thickest grass you can find and you should find some of these potentially “gator” sized fish. Large topwater plugs like the Rapala Skitterwalk or X-Walk 13 worked near the edges of the mullet schools will create some huge explosions from hungry trout looking to restore their energy supplies in preparation for the upcoming spawning season. Once the sun gets up in the sky switch over to Saltwater Assassin 5-inch soft plastic jerk baits rigged on a weedless worm hook. The new Vapor Shad or Dai-Dapper models imitate the larger mullet very effectively and good color choices are Gold Pepper Shiner, Native Shiner, Houdini, and Arkansas Shiner. Slot sized redfish will also hit these tantalizing Assassin plastic lures so look for a mixed bag of both species on some days. Black drum may be found in the deeper flats and these fish usually take jigs tipped with shrimp or Pro-Cure scents. Shrimp and blue crab flavors are my two favorite for the drum.
