Banana River Lagoon Fishing Report: Sept. 2014

I n August the middle portion of the Banana River from the 520 Causeway southward to about the Eau Gallie Causeway experienced a fish kill related to a huge algae bloom. The culprit is the highly toxic rainwater runoff that drained into this area. The rainwater is poisoned by lawn fertilizers and pesticides used by the residence of Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach and also from the Cocoa Beach Country Club Golf Course located at the west end of Minuteman causeway.

Hopefully this area of the lagoon system will recover from this toxic assault, but until it does, anglers will not have good fishing in this section of the space coast. Once the bloom subsides anglers should start to find speckled trout, redfish and possibly small snook on the flats near mullet schools. Topwater plugs and soft plastic jerk baits should work on these remaining fish that did not die last month.
