Banana River Lagoon Report: June 2014

Banana River Lagoon Fishing
Big trout like this one hold tight to mullet schools looking for an easy target.

R edfish and trout action continues to be good this month for anglers using live fingerling mullet or Rapala Skitterwalk top water plugs during early morning periods before the water on the flats get too hot. Once the mullet action dies around 9 to 10 am look for the shade provided by docks or mangroves, and the deeper edges of the flats to provide cooler water for the trout and reds to relax in. Slow moving soft plastic baits like the Saltwater Assassin 4-inch sea shad rigged on a weedless worm hook are very good at tricking the fish into biting. You can also take some of those live fingerling mullet and any ladyfish that you might happen to catch and cut them into chunks for the trout and reds to pick up. Fresh mullet or ladyfish often turn into your best friend once the hot mid-day conditions set in this month. Lighted docks and sea walls offer great angling opportunities for anglers looking to beat the heat and still get some fishing done after work or on the weekends in the June time frame.
