Billfish Invitational in Bimini cancelled for 2012

ALICE TOWN, BIMINI (APRIL 25, 2012) —Organizers for the 2012 Billfish Invitational in Bimini today have announced cancellation of this year’s fishing tournament.

“Regrettably, like other tournaments that have announced cancellations this season, we are faced with the challenges of the current economy, the pain of higher fuel costs, and scheduling difficulties for travelling boats with tournament commitments in the Abacos,” said Tournament Director Ned Stone.

“The Billfish Invitational is a non-money charity event so the format doesn’t offer the opportunity of defraying fuel costs with the hope of prize money”,  Stone added in remarking on how travelling boats often decide which tournaments to participate in.    “We¹ve fallen short of our target for entrants thirty days out and concluded it unlikely we would deliver the audience expected by our sponsors or the named charities.” The Billfish Invitational is the latest of several established Bahamas fishing tournaments that have been cancelled for 2012.

“We will be back next season with the Billfish Invitational,” assured Stone. “Hopefully we¹ll have a better economic environment but in the meantime, since many of our anglers are  already in the Abacos, we¹re throwing our support to the upcoming 25th Annual Green Turtle Club Fishing Tournament,” Stone added.   “It’s quite similar to the structure of the Billfish Invitational, a non-money catch-and-release family tournament.”
