If being on an island surrounded by some of the world’s best bonefishing flats is your idea of paradise, then put Bimini on your “must do” list for January. Bimini’s famous vibrant crystal clear blue water will provide a flats fishing experience second to none. In January, the water will have cooled sufficiently to bring the larger fish on to the flats with the incoming tide. The schools will still be quite large. We are talking about fish in the 8 to 10 pound range. The colder water will make these gray ghosts fight even harder. In addition to bonefish, there will be some hefty permit, jack crevalle and plenty of barracuda to bend a rod and provide some great fishing fun. Crab and shrimp are the natural baits of choice. While cruising the flats, do not overlook the edges near the mangrove forests. The flats of both North and South Bimini will be very productive. The near shore reefs will also be holding plenty of grouper and mutton snapper.
