Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – March 2013

The nearshore – reef fishing has been great and is predicted to improve. Lots of yellowtail and triggerfish (very tasty). PHOTO CREDIT: Jan Derk.

March is perhaps one of the best months to fish Bimini’s expansive flats and nearshore waters. Spring signals the start of longer days, rising water temperature and for the most part, calmer winds. It was in March, 42 years ago, that Jerry Lavenstein of Virginia Beach, and legendary guide Ansil Saunders headed out to the Bimini flats for a day of fishing. Little did they know that on that day, they would catch a 16 pound 3 ounce bonefish! Can you expect that again this March? Who knows? I can tell you that the fishing has been great with many fish in the 9 to 12 pound range and there a lots of them. Permit are in the 20 to 25 pound range. Permit seem to be most hungry for live crabs. The nearshore/reef fishing has been great and is predicted to improve. Lots of yellowtail and triggerfish (very tasty). Now here is the “Bimini Twist”—while bottom fishing with fresh pilchards I hooked up big time! It was quite a fight. I had no idea as to what it was…shark maybe? Well when I got it to the boat is was a 42 pound wahoo! Now that is a fishing story!!! It only will get better as we move into the spring months so put Bimini on your spring bucket list.
