Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – May 2012

There are not too many months during the year that can match the month of May. Long days, cool nights, and fishing that is hot, hot, hot. If you want to check out some “virgin flats”, run south to Cat Cay. On a recent trip with a client, his very first bonefish weighed in at 13.5 pounds. His second was “only” nine pounds! For the day we caught and released 15 fish. We were using a fly that I tie myself called the Ebbie Secret Weapon. If you want to find out what it is, come fish a day with me.

April was a little on the windy side, but the winds typically lay down during May. The flats are also loaded with good size permit, shark and barracuda, and of course, large tarpon in the channel. The mutton snapper and yellowtail bite will continue to be strong through May. Last week I caught a 27 pound mutton on a yellow lure on my way back to the lodge to get a bigger boat to fish outside! All in all, May is a super time to enjoy the best of Bimini, North and South!
