[dropcap]W[/dropcap]elcome to 2015 and a great New Year to put Bimini in your plans for some great fishing! Yes, it is January and like most of the U.S. (and sometimes the Bahamas) the bonefish here are trying to stay warm. With the colder surface waters due to wind and overall temperature, the fish will tend to be hanging in deeper water. You will want to target the tidal channels and creeks for your best shots with the incoming tide which will bring in warmer water with the tidal exchange. The good news is the fish on average will be larger; the bad news is the schools will be smaller. So you will have to make the best of each shot. Permit, barracuda, and an occasional tarpon will also be in the mix. Natural baits (cut shrimp, conch, crab) will work well. Your standard flies will also work just as well. Remember you will be fishing water that is a little deeper than in the warm months. Near shore catches will include yellowtail, triggerfish and a variety of grouper, including tasty strawberry grouper.
Start the New Year right and spend a little time in the Bimini’s – You won’t be disappointed!
