Brevard Banana Lagoon June 2016

After the giant fish kill that happens in late February and early March this body of water has been pretty much devoid of any fish species. Strong southerly winds in the beginning of May have helped to push some better quality water northward from the Sebastian are into this portion of our lagoon system. With this cleaner water bait fish like mullet and glass minnows are returning to the area which in turn is bringing some small trout, jack, and ladyfish for anglers to pursue. Look for areas with these baits on the western shoreline flats north and south of the Pineda causeway and also around the south end of the 1000 island area of Cocoa Beach.

Though we still do not expect excellent numbers of fish to return to this body of water for some time, at least there are a few species available for anglers to target this month. If the county-wide fertilizer application ban that goes into effect from June through August can continue to help improve our waters in this lagoon, we will all be pleased. Hopefully anyone that reads this column on a monthly basis is well educated on the negative effects caused by fertilizer and pesticide application during the rainy months and has already put a self-imposed ban on these “lagoon poisons” in place for their property. Let’s all continue to promote good stewardship of this precious yet imperiled waterway.
