Captain Rodney’s Corner

I look forward to my birthday with anticipation every year. Not because of the pending great celebration, or my greed for gifts, but simply because it falls within a week of the first day of fall!
In truth, I’m like Charlie Brown. Time and time again, Lucy seduces Charlie into kicking the football, each time pulling it away before he connects. Every year I romantically savor the start of the cool fall season, when in reality, our average daily high temperatures hover in the mid-eighties until well into the middle of November.

But not all is lost during this annual progression. The days are consecutively getting shorter (the kids are back in school!), there’s usually more cloud cover and occasionally a weak cold front will pass by us, turning the wind into a more mild northeast breeze.

This typically contributes to an overall upswing in the quality of one’s surf fishing and catching experiences. As we get further away from summer, the opportunities to target numerous species of gamefish increase and improve. The sharks (many different species), tarpon, snook, barracuda, and both king and Spanish mackerel that have been feeding on schools of baitfish, mostly menhaden, threadfin herring and pilchards, typically stay in our inshore areas until ocean temperatures start to fall. These fish will be joined by increasing numbers of pompano, bluefish, whiting, red and black drum, sheepshead and flounder.

As the great schools of mullet (aka the fall mullet run) begin to migrate along the coast, catching is increasingly more productive. By early fall, a shore or kayak angler fishing the inshore waters of the Space Coast (Brevard County) has more chances to catch different types of fish than any angler fishing anywhere else in America.

The Space Coast International Surf Fishing Tournament will be held October 4th-19th. This is the perfect place and a perfect time to compete for such a prestigious title. You have as much chance as anyone else to catch the “big one,” so sign up today to share in the fun!
