As the dog-days of summer set in, bass fishing on Deerpoint, or anywhere for that matter, will be a test of your ability to withstand the extreme heat of this region. There’s no question that the early morning bite will more often be your best bet, but make no mistake, fish will eat any time they are presented with what they consider a “feeding opportunity.” The challenge this time of year is presenting that opportunity to them in the thick grass and lily pads that cover so much of the lake.
If you have a small boat, I suggest exploring the furthest reaches of Ecofina Creek that you can get to. The springs in that part of the lake will keep water temps lower. Bait fish and big fish migrate that way for relief and food. The water can be extremely clear so light line and finesse presentations can pay off. During early mornings and low-light, try casting a Rapala F-13 Floating Minnow along grass edges and pockets. Work it slowly with twitches and pauses…they can’t resist!
Punching mats will still be a big player anywhere on the lake you can find them. The problem is that they don’t all hold fish. Some days, it can be like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Keep the big stick in hand and buzz a frog over thick grass and the bites will come…fish gotta eat!
Good fishing and God bless.
