Cooler temperatures have definitely arrived in the lowcountry, and for those of us who spend our time on the water it means one thing, there is a lot of great fishing ahead. The fall fishery in Charleston can often produce huge numbers of fish. Trout, Sheepshead and the ever present Redfish will be on a mission to fatten up for winter, and they should remain eager to eat properly presented baits well into January. It is also what I call the “skill building” time of year. With the fish biologically triggered to feed, now is the time to try that new jig you heard about in a local seminar or fish an old favorite a different way. If you like I am more than happy to share with you a variety of techniques I use to put a few extra fish in the boat each trip.
On recent charters Redfish and Trout have been cooperating well with many trips producing better than average results. Several of these trips were “artificial lures only” at the angler’s request. A few fisherman recorded personal best catches along the way. The Sheepshead bite was available however the wind kept us from staying positioned perfectly and muddied the water in some of my favorite spots. Having said that we still managed to drop some nice ones in the boat and they are on my list of fish to target when the conditions are right.
