The weather is starting to give us some breaks, but rears up every once in a while to remind us Who is in charge. Some cold bottom temp’s have come early, moving the fish around. It’s not that the fish are not out there or not biting, but they are on the move, and being found in some unexpected locations. This means a little more running and exploratory fishing to find your target. Once you find it, however, it may be short lived, with the fish gone the next day. Amberjack are still around in good numbers, but in shallower. They too are on the move, migrating from wreck to wreck. They are hungry, and biting anything that moves. Vertical speed jigs have caught us a lot of these hard fighting fish, up to 55 pounds in recent weeks. The heavier jigs also drop faster, allowing them to be worked in stronger currents.
AJ’s are not the only fish hitting these jigs, as we’ve caught Snapper and Grouper as well, along with about any other fish in the water column at that location. Along with pockets of cold bottom is cool upwelling’s and stirred up water bringing some dirty and cloudy conditions that seem to slow the bite. The troll has seen Mahi do a disappearing act in the last few weeks, though at any time and given day they could show. For now we have seen Barracuda and False Albacore the dominate catch trolling. A lot of Sharks are also following the weed lines out deeper, and the bait pods in close, making this a possible catch, if your geared up for it. Slow trolling for Kings on the reefs are hit and miss, and the Bait pods in shallower seems to be holding the most fish. Cobia are also being found around structure, from the Buoy line to the 120’ artificial reefs. They like most fish seem ready to eat when you find them. With the fish moving around, it’s more important than ever to have a variety of options ready for whatever bite the day brings, and with fish on the move, you never know what surprise may be on the other end on the line once your rod bends over.
