Fishing with an American Patriot

I recently had the privilege of taking out a true American Patriot when my neighbor hired me to take his grandfather out fishing.  I knew little about Jim and he never once told me his age or background.  I had no idea he was 91 years old; had I, I would’ve probably been a bit worried about his ability to endure the elements of the day.  I knew he was up there in years but 91!?!…WOW!

Something in the back of my head told me to snap this photo, and I’m glad I did because there’s so much more to this story.  Jim is a veteran of WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.  He was drafted into the Army during WWII, serving as an infantryman then and in the Korean War.  In 1947, he switched services, going into the Air Force to work Intelligence, and went on to serve in the Vietnam War.  In 1974, Jim retired from service in the highest enlisted grade, Chief Master Sergeant.

Jim loves bass fishing in his home state of Missouri, and during his recent trip to Panama City, he got to tangle with red snapper, trigger fish, bonita, and even an amberjack!  I hope that if I reach 91, I have the grit to haul in an AJ.

Throughout our day, Jim never had a whole lot to say, but he really enjoyed the trip.  He told me that when he has to go, his wish is to die at the hands of a jealous husband.  He has a great sense of humor!

There aren’t many men like Jim left in this world, so If you have a chance to take a Patriot out, do so!  You’ll be glad you did.  It was a true honor to spend the day with this man.  Thankfully, his legacy lives on in his grandson, a retired Colonel, my neighbor and friend.

Jim, thank you for your service and I hope to see you on board again soon.
