[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ell April is here again and we always talk about seasons, as we know that most fish behave a little differently in every season. Spring is the time when many types of fish begin to gather in schools or groups to spawn.
Here in East Grand Bahama, the bonefish are moving around the flats gathering fish. Sometimes we see schools with up to 2000 or more fish in one group. When there is a school that size, there are lots of shark and barracuda following along. Speaking of sharks, we as guides are concerned about the amount of sharks on the flats. We know that it’s not legal to catch sharks, but we would hope that our government has a plan in place to control the shark populations here in the Bahamas. Our business is mostly catch and release and in some areas more than 60% of fish we release are eaten by sharks, so this is becoming a problem. With that said, April is a great time for fishing because the fish are in feed mode and we all like to do some catching every now and again.
Fishing the reefs, channels and flats is great whether by fly, lure, or jig and bait—all is fun, you can have it your way! It’s all about what brings you joy. Keep the fun in the game.
