Grand Bahama Shipyard 2nd Annual Fishing Tournament

32 boats took to the sea for the 2nd Annual Grand Bahama Shipyard Fishing Tournament, doubling last year’s participation. “We were extremely blessed with perfect weather for the event! The fishermen took advantage of the calm seas and fair winds with bountiful catches,” said Pavey. “I have been told that this was the most fish ever caught in a tournament here on Grand Bahama Island!” Photo: Jock Hall.

On what could only be called a glorious day, 32 boats took to the sea for the 2nd Annual Grand Bahama Shipyard Fishing Tournament. A little after 7:00 a.m. Father Harry Bain blessed all participants via VHF radio, and CEO Carl Rotkirch officially started the competition. Around 3:30 p.m. the first boat weighed in and the crowd at the weigh-in station began getting busy. By 6:00 p.m. all boats had returned and catches had been weighed and verified, giving bragging rights to Team Executive Marine. “We ran a point system, winners in each category received points toward the overall win,” explained Pavey. “Most categories were worth 5 points, and as we didn’t have any team win more than one category, there ended up being a sevenway tie; the tie breaker was decided by the largest fish.”

Speaking at the awards ceremony, CEO Rotkrich took the opportunity to thank his staff, “I would like to especially acknowledge our arrangement team, the 3 and 4 year apprentices and their chairman Nagee Smith, who have worked so hard to make this all come beautifully together.” He also thanked the 40 sponsors who helped contribute to the event, and without whose contributions the event would not have been possible. Funds raised from this tournament will be used to renovate and modernize the playgrounds at both Free Town and High Rock Primary Schools, as well as donate computer equipment and smart boards.
