Inshore Charleston Fishing Report: Feb 2014

Inshore fishing in February can be difficult. This time of year, it is really important to pick your days to venture out. Hopefully, we will not have extended days of really cold weather which can lower our water temps to the point of killing off the trout and shrimp populations.

Huge schools of redfish can be seen in the clear waters this month, but if the waters are too cold, getting them to eat can be a challenge. Sheepshead can still be caught inshore this time of year using fiddlers or fresh oysters. Other inshore fish, such as reds and trout can be caught as well, but you have to fish very slowly. On those few days that the sun is out and the winds are calm, reef fishing is always a good bet to get some action. Spiny dogfish sharks, black sea bass, black drum, weakfish and sheepshead can all be caught on the reefs in the winter. Bait your hook with fiddlers for the sheepshead, black sea bass and black drum. The spiny dogfish sharks will eat shrimp or cut baits fished near or on the bottom.

As you head out this month, be sure to dress in layers to stay warm, and always let someone know if you are venturing out in the ocean.
