Bass fishing on Lake Jackson this time of year is anything but consistent as June was one of the hottest months, if not the hottest month, on record.

As lake levels continue to drop from evaporation, the spring grass and lily pads have now fallen over creating a blanket of growth on the surface throughout the lake. Main boat runs are still open, along with Crowder, but as we have all seen in the past it only gets worst as temperatures continue to soar. Fishing’s not a total bust, big bass still have to eat, and Lake Jackson is known for some of the Panhandles largest.

Early mornings and late afternoons make the most sense as temperatures are much easier to tolerate; this goes for the fish too. As the sun comes up, the surface becomes oven-like, as the extra vegetation holds the heat in place. You can actually feel the difference running from one area to another. Not many outboard or trolling motors are made for running in thick vegetation so be careful not to burn up your motor getting to your favorite spot.

If you have to fish during the day, make sure you take gear with you specifically made for flipping or pitching heavier Texas-rigged baits. Some areas where open water meets thick grass or pads is perfect for a top water frog of some sort. Remember, bass still get hungry even in the warmest of days.

Even if you’re not fishing Lake Jackson in July, there is still plenty of fun to be had. The Crowder area remains open almost year round where pleasure seekers run ski boats, jet skis, pontoon boats, kayaks and even small fishing boats. Often you’ll find several boats tied together drifting across the lake, with families cooking out and playing in the water. Average depth across Crowder is about 7’ so be careful.

Until next time, be safe and have a HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!
