Long Island Offshore Fishing Report and Forecast: July 2014

LongIslandOffshore2

[dropcap]Y[/dropcap]ellowfin tuna has been running very well and will continue to run through July. These fish can be caught at Dutch Bar, Shallow Ground and Pinnacle. The best bait for this species is live bait. If you don’t have live bait, try trolling ballyhoo or plugs. Some mutton snapper will still be running in July. Look for them in the channels or outside the reef using squid as bait. It looks like the mahi- mahi are finished around here; haven’t seen any caught in about three weeks. There will be some yellowtail snapper around. Best bet is depths of 50 to 90 feet using squid, along with a chum block, fished outside of the reef.

We are definitely moving into the summer season cycle but there will still be plenty to catch and to bend a rod.
