As a fishing guide, I am often asked the question, “Is the fishing still good in December?” Although the fish move a bit slower because of the colder water, they still have to eat. In northwest Florida, December’s weather can be quite unpredictable. Sometimes it can be at, sometimes calm and warm, or sometimes it can be cold and rainy, but the fish bite can also be excellent. Cooler water temperature does not effect the redfish like other species, so I use finger mullet near walls and navigation markers. Pelagic fish like Spanish and King mackerel are pretty much gone back out to deep sea until spring time. Flounder and sheepshead can be caught around structure and in the outlet of the bay. Flounder cannot resist Bull minnows and I use live shrimp when fishing for sheepshead. You can find Speckled trout in the ICW canal, and I use ¼ ounce jig heads with two inch Gulp finger mullet when fishing for this species. I free line Bull minnows near walls and structure too. So come on out and let’s catch some fish! Fishing can be very good in December with less fishing pressure.
